Travel Information

  • Roads
    • In Tanzania
      • Arusha Town's roads in good condition.
      • Expect traffic delays in Dar es Salaam due to congestion
      • Roads in the parks are in good condition
      • Road in the Ngorongoro Conservation Area are poor
      • Southern parks (Selous Game Reserve and Ruaha National Park) close on 23 March until June because of poor air and road access in the rainy season
    • In Kenya
      • Nairobi city roads in good condition but expect heavy traffic delays
      • Use caution if parking as parking fees and clamping may be in effect
      • Many parts of Samburu are closed due to rain damage
      • Roads to the Masai Mara - some very bumpy areas (approx 25 km.)
      • Road to Nakuru rough, especially near the weighbridge
      • Rain may cause sand drifts in some roads
      • There are some areasof bad road between Nairobi and Mombasa closer to Mombasa
  • Air Access
    • All airports and airstrips are currently in normal operation except as noted below.
    • Most air access is limited to daylight hours - 06.30 to 18.30 except at international airports
    • Zanzibar Airport will close daily from 19.00 hours until 07.00 hours starting 01 July for renovations.
  • Rail Access
    • Rail access in Tanzania is limited. Routes between Zambia/Dar es Salaam and Kigoma/Dar es Salaam are open
    • Rail service in Kenya is reliable. Trains are available from Nairobi to Mombasa.
  • Sea/Lake Ferries
    • There are a number of boats that travel between Zanzibar and Dar es Salaam.
    • Lake Victoria has a number of ferries that travel between lake cities of Tanzania, Kenya and Uganda. Travellers should exercise good judgment when selecting these boat based on overcrowding and conditions of the vessel.
    • Lake Tanganyika has a number of boats that can take travellers to Gombe Stream National Park or Mahale Mountains National Park. Safety of the vessel should be considered before travelling.

Wildlife and Park Information

TANZANIA

  • The Wildebeest Migration
    • The 1.8 million wildebeest and zebra of the migration are now in Seronera and western Serengeti.
  • Serengeti National Park
    • Game viewing is currently good throughout the park. It is best in the south and west, but there are a number of cats in central Serengeti
  • Ngorongoro Conservation Area
    • The number of resident game make this a great place to get exciting photos any time of the year. You will also find that animals are less afraid of the vehicle and will allow you to get close up viewing without problems
    • Roads in Ngorongoro are in poor condition and access to the Crater is by 4-Wheel Drive only
  • Lake Manyara National Park
    • Best for viewing of baboons and a variety of monkeys
    • A number of birds can be seen
  • Tarangire National Park
    • With the end of the rains, some of the elephants and other herds have moved out of the park. As the area dries up, we can expect more movement returning to the park and great game viewing.
    • Hundreds of species of birds can be found in this park
  • Arusha National Park
    • A number of giraffes and smaller animals call this small park home
    • A walking safari in the morning with an escort can give you a great opportunity to escape your safari vehicle and observe some of the smaller animals by foot
    • One of the only places where the black and white Colobus monkey can be found
  • Southern Tanzania (The Selous Game Reserve, Ruaha National Park, Mikumi National Park)
    • A large variety of wildlife can be viewed in these areas
    • Walking and boating safaris can make for an interesting day
    • These parks are just reopening after the rainy season.  These cooler months are the best to visit the southern parks
    • Mild temperatures are expected through the next month

KENYA

  • Masai Mara
    • Though the migration is a few months away from filling the Masai Mara, game viewing is still excellent with an abundance of resident wildlife
    • Resident game allow for year round enjoyment
  • Amboseli
    • This park offers the best views of Mount Kilimanjaro
    • A good park to see the larger mammals
  • Lake Naivasha
    • Abundance of water fowl make this an ornithologist's paradise
    • Some game can be viewed on Crescent Island
  • Lake Nakuru
    • Flamnigo and Pelicans feature in this popular park
    • Olive baboon plentiful
  • Samburu
    • Crocs and hippo in the river are a popular attraction
    • Other game viewing is very good
  • Tsavo East and West
    • These under explored parks are great for people who want to escape the crowds
    • This is Kenya's largest park
    • A variety of wildlife reside in this park including the "big five"
  • Aberdares
    • Popular for tree lodges
    • Overnight game viewing from the comfort of your lodge
    • A variety of wildlife present
