Hippos are worth the trip |
|
The hippopotamus is one of Africa's most interesting animals. It spends much of its time in water to stay cool, but comes out in the evenings to graze for its grassy meals. Though a herbivore, it is one of the most dangerous African animals to man. More people die from hippo attacks each year than from snakes and lions combined. This is because the hippo is a highly territorial animal that can become violent to protect its territory.
Hippos have been know to travel quite a bit. It is believed that the hippos of the Ngorongoro Conservation Area migrated there centuries ago from Lake Eyasi and Lake Manyara. |

This past June has been one of the coldest on record for parts of East Africa. And the people in Arusha have really noticed it, with lows going into the single digits (Celcius) and highs only reaching the mid teens. It is normally cold in Arusha this time of year, but for this part of Africa, cold used to mean lows of around 15 and highs around 23. The unseasonabbly cold weather has been attributed to effects of climate change. Homes are not heated in Arusha except for the few fortunate people that have fireplaces. |
